James Luna born in 1950 is a Mexican American performance and installation artist, earned a BFA at the University of California and currently lives on the La Jolla indian reservations. He began his career as a painter but later moved onto performance and installation, his own body is used a lot in his work, one of his exhibits "Artifact Piece" he laid still in a display case with many of his favorite things and a label describing and explaining his scars. This piece in itself is saying that he is a living artifact since native races are not as common in the modern world. A lot of his work deals with his native heritage.
"I truly live in two worlds. This 'two world' concept once posed too much ambiguity for me, as I felt torn as to whom I was. In maturity I have come to find it the source of my power, as I can easily move between these two places and not feel that I have to be one or the other, that I am an Indian in this modern society."
